2018 WINTER NEWSLETTER Vol. 2
From Mike Schons, Region Director:
What a season, but don’t think we are done yet!
We still have courses and events planned as we move into the spring like weather.
March 10 – OEC Module of the Senior Program. This is the Evaluation! We have a number of Candidates and are going to need lots of help! Candidates, be sure to register first on the region website, nspemr.org.
March 18th – Low Angle Rescue at Alpine Valley. This is a really fun class taught by Jon O’Dell. This course also can be found on the region website. I personally took the LAR (low angle rescue) course two years ago at Alpine Valley. This was a GREAT course as we used real toboggans and actual LAR equipment. I highly encourage folks to take this course!
March 25th – Mountaineering 1 at Mt. Holly. Registration is on the website calendar. Space is limited, so sign up soon.
April 2018, there will be the first offering this year of an Instructor Development course. We should have that class on the calendar soon. Please keep your eye on the region calendar for classes and updates!
May 2nd – Region Meeting at Genesys
May 12th – Region Awards Banquet at Mt. Holly.
The on-line registration has worked well this year. You go to the website, click on Register, for the course you wish to take, fill out the form and you are done, as long as you click confirm to the email confirming your registration. You are registered and your waiver is signed!
I would like to thank Marge Loula and Rikki Gheller for coordinating the Detroit Winter Blast. Boyne Mountain put in a hill and we patrolled the “city slopes”. This is fun event and GREAT NSP exposure.
I would like to congratulate our new Seniors!
So far for the class of 2018 we have Ron Boyd, Senior Patroller.
Mike Gallager and Robert Apoian from Alpine Valley, Jamie Gibson from Mt. Holly who are now Senior Alpine Patrollers. Congratulations! We will have more names to add to the class after this weekend’s OEC for the Senior Module at Pine Knob.
Speaking of the Senior Program, you can find the information on our website, nspemr.org. Registration for next season is now open. If you are currently in the program, and you did not finish this season, you must register again to participate next season.
This year we had 35 registered Candidates. This is the largest class in the Central Division and it is wonderful to see so many of you wishing to advance your ski patrol education. We are happy to help you through your journey.
So yes, we have been busy and continue to look for and develop courses for you, members of the Eastern Michigan Region. If you have an idea for a course, please feel free to contact me.
As patrol banquets start to come around, I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can!
