From Mike Schons, Region Director:

he season is just around the corner and patrols are starting to get ready. Fall refreshers are taking place, skis will be waxed, sharpened or new ones purchased at the upcoming ski swaps.

Speaking of refreshers, please check the region calendar if you cannot make your patrol refresher.  Also if you will be out of town, you can view the Northern Michigan Region calendar at https://www.nspnmr.com/ or Ohio Region at https://www.ohionsp.org/1calendar.

The region make-up refresher will be at Pine Knob on November 17th.  This is the “Make-up” OEC refresher for folks who were unable to make any of the refreshers this year.  Please contact Steve Werner for details and registration at steve.werner@usa.net

Senior Candidates, you have until December 1st to register your intent to participate in this coming seasons Senior Evaluations.  This is a great journey and opportunity to improve your skills.  The registration and program information can be found on the Region website, www.nspemr.org.  Even if you have previously registered as a Senior Candidate you must register again so that we can plan for numbers and staff to help you on your journey.

Speaking of skill improvement, the Certified application deadline is January 1st.  This is the opportunity to become the best you can be as far as ski patrol skills are concerned.  For information on the Certified program, please check the EMR website at www.nspemr.org and/or contact Jamie Roell, EMR Certified Advisor at, jvroell@comcast.net  Jamie is also hosting a Certified Awareness event at the January 19th Toboggan and ski/ride enhancement seminar.

So what’s coming next for on-hill training?  The on-hill toboggan and ski-ride clinics are scheduled and on the region calendar.  These along with the “Steeps and Bumps” clinics are open to all patrollers who wish to improve their skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing techniques.  This season we again have the Women’s Clinic and this year they plan on having a Women’s steeps and bumps clinic.

Basic Alpine Patroller Evaluations are now all scheduled with the first being Section III on January 27th.  Best of luck to all!

We plan on participating again this season in the Detroit Winter Blast, January 25th through January 27th.  This is a really great opportunity to be an ambassador for the NSP to folks who really don’t know much about us.

Saturday February 2nd is the Young Adult Patroller clinic to be held at Mt. Brighton.  For Information, please contact Cricket Nickolaou, EMR Young Adult Advisor at, cricketnick@aol.com

Senior on-hill pre-evaluation is scheduled on February 10th.  Senior Candidates, remember, you MUST be signed off by your training staff to participate in the pre-evaluation.

Of course as always, please review the EMR calendar for dates, times, contacts and information.  The calendar can be found on our Eastern Michigan Region website https://www.nspemr.org/calendar.

I plan to visit each resort in our region again this season and talking with all of you and listen to your concerns

Looking forward to seeing you on the hills!

Mike Schons
